by Justine Oriaku, Network Engineer at Redtech
When I decided to join Redtech, I wanted something new, a challenge that would expose me to more complex issues, bigger infrastructure problems, and high-pressure situations that would stretch my skills. At the time, I had become so familiar with my previous environment that I could tell what my next day’s activity was going to look like, and I knew the likely challenges I would face. So, when I heard about an opening at Redtech, I jumped in without hesitation.
My First Project: A Trial by Fire
I joined Redtech as a Network Engineer, and within my first three months, I was handed my first major project, supporting the IT infrastructure for Heirs Energies during a massive network refresh.
The goal was to replace outdated network devices like switches and access points across multiple locations, including Port Harcourt and remote sites like Agbada. The plan was two days per location, configuration, setup, replacement, and testing.
We worked around the clock to ensure that the next morning, users could connect their laptops or devices to the network and work like nothing had happened. This project was quite an experience for me, as I was barely two to three months into my role at Redtech. Despite the challenges, it taught me something crucial that in our line of work, downtime is not an option.
Growing Into Bigger Shoes
That first project set the stage for my growth at Redtech. Over time, my role expanded beyond hands-on technical work. I moved into managing cross-functional IT operations, bigger projects, higher stakes.
I coordinated IT representatives across multiple sites, managed vendors, and ensured that critical oil and gas operations at Heirs Energies had 99.9% uptime. Managing people and technology simultaneously forced me to become better at balancing priorities and making quick, informed decisions. In our environment, speed and precision are survival skills.
My Impact at Redtech
One thing I’ve learned is that IT infrastructure is a strategic enabler for the entire business. From the innovation team to finance, HR, and sales, every department depends on the network being reliable and secure. My role is to facilitate collaboration and seamless business operations across the organisation.
I’ve designed, implemented, and maintained high-availability systems that keep everything running. I’ve also integrated advanced network solutions for Heirs Energies that have improved reliability, streamlined operations, and reduced downtime.
Overcoming Obstacles
The challenges in this role are as varied as they are intense. Harsh weather knocking out service provider links, tight vendor deadlines, technical complexities, each require a different approach. To overcome these obstacles, I’ve established clear communication channels, escalated issues to the right stakeholders, and been proactive in my approach.
One example was the Starlink integration for a major client, SMTS. It was technically demanding, but by anticipating issues, escalating to the right channels, and keeping communication clear with all stakeholders, we delivered successfully.
When problems arise, my approach is straightforward:
1. Define the problem precisely.
2. Identify the source.
3. Fix the real cause; whether it’s a faulty provider link or simply a user’s unplanned Windows update.
The Mindset That Keeps Me Going
Working in IT at Redtech means being resilient, adaptable, and passionate. Some days are stressful; there’s no denying that. But I enjoy what I do. When you’re passionate about your work, you’re more likely to be motivated and driven to deliver excellent results. I remind myself that I’m helping people, solving problems, and making the company stronger. Technology moves fast, so I never rely on yesterday’s solutions for today’s challenges.
From Dreams of Machines to Networks of Opportunity
Funny enough, IT wasn’t my first career dream. I wanted to be a mechanical engineer. But I found myself studying IT in school, and now I’m one of the few people actually working in what they studied.
If I had to choose again between mechanical engineering and IT? That would be tough, but I think I’d still stick with IT. It’s been a wonderful journey, and I enjoy every bit of it.
Looking back, my time at Redtech has been full of growth, adaptation, and impact. I’ve transitioned from being a person who fixes issues to someone who prevents them. I’ve learned to provide strong technical support and manage vendors effectively. I’m proud to say that I’ve made a positive impact on the company, and I’m excited to continue growing and learning with the team.
That’s my route so far, I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and the experiences I’ve gained. I’m excited to see what the future holds, and I’m confident that I’ll continue to grow and thrive at Redtech.
